القدس or al-Quds is Arabic for "The Holy." This is the name that Arab Christians and Muslims use to refer to the city commonly known in English as "Jerusalem." Numerous biblical references testify to repeated attempts by Israelites to violently ethnically cleanse "the inhabitants of the land" (II Sam. 5:6) from the city. According to the Bible, these attempts were never completely successful.
